More than half a century of audio mastery

Designing microphones with amazing sound, exceptional consistency and outstanding durability is no easy feat. DPA Microphones draws on more than six decades of world-class microphone design experience. This history starts back in the 1950s, when our predecessor, Brüel & Kjær, developed the first, precisely accurate measurement microphones. Today, sound superiority and technical innovation is still at the heart of everything we do.

In 1992, two entrepreneurial spirits, Ole Brøsted Sørensen & Morten Støve, left Brüel & Kjær and started a transformation that affects the audio industry to this day. They turned the most well-known and accurate measurement microphones in the world into the clearest, truest pro-audio microphones you can purchase today. The  4006 Omnidirectional Microphone was one of the first recording mics DPA developed and is still one of the best-loved recording mics in the world.

After hearing DPA recording mics, professional sound engineers in other segments began to take notice. In particular, the theater market needed a solution that, while still capturing clear sound, was flexible and easily concealable. About this same time, Danish companies were making amazing advances in hearing aid technology; focusing on creating better sound in smaller packages. In order to gain the competencies needed to accomplish this task, DPA collaborated with the Danish hearing aid manufacturer, Muphone.

With these skills in place, DPA minimized the capsule size into a miniature package that was so clear sounding and yet unobtrusive, it could support creative expression on the stage. Once the capsule was perfected, work began on creating headset versions of the miniature mics. After years of shared success, DPA and Muphone merged in 2005.

Over the past decade, DPA has developed unique mic solutions to appeal to new segments of the market as well as improving the specs of the product portfolio. Since 2015, DPA has intensified its focus on new product development and has increased its investment into R&D. Concealable miniatures, flexible headsets and top-of-the line vocal microphones are a few of the solutions that have changed the audio world through the years. 4060-family.jpg

Not content with resting on its laurels, DPA introduced a game-changing new technology in 2017. CORE by DPA was introduced in the miniature lavalier and headset capsules. This preamplifier technology minimizes distortion and expands dynamic range – making these amazing miniatures sound even better than ever.

DPA's long history of precision and perfection continues to define DPA Microphones to this day. Long before manufacturing begins, the magic starts with our R&D team in Denmark. This group lays the groundwork for each microphone design by monitoring trends in the market, consulting real users to gain customer insights and using world-class technology and design processes.

Moving on to production, each microphone is assembled using a perfect balance between automated and handcrafted manufacturing. It takes up to 200 individual steps to assemble a DPA microphone. During the manufacturing process in Denmark, a microphone can be calibrated up to 15 times before final approval. Narrow tolerances ensure that you can switch between any parallel DPA mics and never hear a difference in sound. You can be certain that the mics you buy from DPA Microphones will be the best ones you will ever use.
Grab your favorite DPA microphone, close your eyes and listen to your performance. The sound you hear is TRUE SOUND – delivered honestly and passionately.

Did you know?

  • DPA’s 4006 Omnidirectional Microphone is one of the most accurate pro-audio mics in the world. It was directly adapted from an original Brüel & Kjær measurement microphone
  • If you took a DPA miniature mic capsule, enlarged it to the size of a soccer pitch and started up a jet engine 60 meters away, the diaphragm would only move 4 mm. Try to imagine the infinitesimal diaphragm movement at the true 4 x 5.5 mm size
  • Celine Dion was performing in Copenhagen when she dropped her d:facto™ Vocal Mic. She was shocked that she dropped it, but even more surprised when she picked it up and it continued to work without any problems
  • Two DPA microphones were used to record the Apollo 13 liftoff. In addition, the Mars 2020 Rover landed on Mars in 2021 with a 4006 Omnidirectional Microphone and has captured the sounds of Mars
  • DPA mics are used to record all types and levels of sound across the globe – even on Antarctica, where they were used to capture the (very quiet) sound of snowflakes
