DPA MICROPHONES

Bass

Miking a double bass in the studio or live
The most natural sounding microphone placement on a double bass is in the bridge between the strings and the top plate, towards the end of the fretboard.

Standard microphones
Choose a 4006-TL omnidirectional mic (or a 4011-TL cardioid if you need more separation and do not want the proximity bass boost caused by a cardioid mic) and mount it in a strong rubber band or a big piece of foam in the bridge.

In the effort to avoid feedback, even more output from the mic is needed and a placement closer to one of the f-holes is be preferred.

Compact microphones
The DPA VH4000 Microphone Holder for Violin and Bass allows this as well as a more "live-safe" suspension than the above mentioned.

It is designed for a DPA 4021 Compact Cardioid Microphone, which is the compact version of the 4011-TL and has an identical capsule.

Miniature microphones
An even smaller and yet superbly sounding microphone is the miniature 4060 omnidirectional microphone for which a dedicated holder for string instruments has been designed.

The MHS6001 is a soft piece of rubber to place on two neighbouring strings between the bridge and the string holder.

In the same category but with special focus on the live application, the 4099B super cardioid miniature with its special mount for acoustic bass offers the ultimate solution.

It attaches to the outer strings and offers maximum separation and reduction of feedback.
